Muay Thai or kickboxing? Depends what for.
They look alike from the outside and they're close cousins. But they're not the same, and to choose well it helps to know what changes in the rules, the technique and, above all, how each is trained. Here's the comparison from someone who teaches Muay Thai, and only Muay Thai, and who'll tell you honestly when kickboxing suits you better, even if that means sending you elsewhere.

Short version: Muay Thai includes everything kickboxing has and adds elbows, knees and clinch. If you learn Muay Thai, you know kickboxing. Not the other way round.
The differences that matter.
| Kickboxing (K-1 / Dutch) | Fitness kickboxing (cardio) | Muay Thai | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weapons | Punches and kicks, sometimes knees | Punches and kicks in the air or on a bag | Punches, elbows, knees and shins |
| Clinch (standing grappling) | No, or very limited | No | Yes, it's central |
| Striking style | Fast combinations, lots of punches | No real contact | Powerful simple strikes, lots of kicks |
| Guard and stance | Squarer, boxing-like | Whatever | Taller, upright, weight back to check kicks |
| What it's trained for | Competition or fitness | Fitness | Competition, fitness, self-defence |
| Initial learning curve | Slightly easier to read at first | Very easy | A little slower, but more complete |
| Where to learn it in the Axarquía | Kickboxing clubs (not me) | Fitness gyms | With me, one-on-one |
Depending on what you're after, here's what I'd say.
You want to compete in K-1 soon
If your goal is a kickboxing league with specific rules, find a kickboxing club. What you learn with me will help, but you'll need a team in that discipline.
You just want to sweat without learning
It's a fitness class with a combat sport's name. Legitimate, fun, cheap. It doesn't teach you to hit or defend yourself, and doesn't claim to.
You want to properly learn
Fitness, complete technique, a base for self-defence and a sport you can keep for life. And if one day you want kickboxing, you'll already have it inside.
Four things that change your decision.
The coach matters more than the discipline
A good kickboxing coach will make you better than a bad Muay Thai coach. Look at who's going to teach you, how they correct, and how much they watch you. The label comes after.
The clinch changes how you move
Learning to hold and off-balance someone standing gives you a body control you can't get from striking alone. It's the biggest practical difference between the two.
Neither is better for beginners
It's a myth that one is for beginners and the other for advanced students. Both start with stance, jab and kick. What changes is where they take you afterwards.
Muay Thai contains kickboxing
Everything a kickboxer does, a Thai boxer does. The reverse isn't true. If in doubt, start with the more complete one.
The usual questions about Muay Thai and kickboxing.
Are Muay Thai and kickboxing the same?
No. They overlap a lot, but Muay Thai allows elbows, knees and clinch, and kickboxing usually doesn't. The stance, rhythm and type of strikes are different too.
Which is better for a beginner?
Neither is easier to learn. Choose by the coach, the attention you get and the kind of training you want, not by the label.
Which is more effective for self-defence?
Muay Thai, because of the elbows, knees and clinch, which are what works at close range. But self-defence needs more than a sport. I have a page on that.
Is kickboxing easier for losing weight?
Cardio kickboxing yes, because it's designed for that. Technical kickboxing and Muay Thai burn about the same, and you learn something on top.
Do you teach kickboxing?
No. I teach Muay Thai. If what you want is kickboxing as a sport, with its rules and its league, find a kickboxing club and I'll say so gladly. If what you want is to learn to strike with fists, kicks and more, that's Muay Thai and that's my thing.
